James McAlpine is a shareholder at Quinlivan & Hughes, P.A. His practice focuses on the defense of professional liability and general casualty actions involving bodily injury and property damage. Jim obtained his undergraduate degree in communications from Minnesota State University Mankato. While there he served as a writer for The Reporter newspaper. Prior to law school he served as the chief technical writer for an aviation software and hardware developer in Minneapolis. He obtained his law degree from William Mitchell College of Law where he served as an assistant editor for the Law Review.
Mr. McAlpine’ s professional liability practice includes representing and defending hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, clinics, physicians, nurses and various other health care entities and individual providers. He frequently advises clients relative to risk management principles, policies and procedures and crises management. He is a member of the Minnesota Defense Lawyer Association’s Long Term Care and Medical Malpractice Committees and the Defense Research Institute’s Long Term Care Committee.
Mr. McAlpine defends bodily injury and property damage claims against businesses, individuals, government entities and insurance companies, typically involving premises or automobile liability. He often serves as a certified arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association in no fault disputes. He has successfully chaired or second chaired trials in all areas of practice and maintains an extensive motion practice.
Mr. McAlpine is a frequent author and presenter to health care providers, insurance companies and legal organizations. He has been published both nationally and in Minnesota relative to malpractice litigation, crises management and general litigation. He is a former Amicus Curiae author to the Minnesota Supreme Court and has been named a Rising Star Attorney by Minnesota Law and Politics and Minneapolis/St. Paul magazine four consecutive years.
