Mr. Thoreen was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1933. He became a shareholder in the firm in 1970. Jerry's practice is concentrated in estate and trust planning, administration and litigation. His experience covers a wide range of matters, including estate settlement- estate tax planning, valuation of closely-held businesses, planning for the payment of death costs, financially distressed estates and estate assets, environmental liability, and income tax planning; estate planning- use of trusts to shelter assets from claims and taxation, use of life insurance (irrevocable trusts, split dollar agreements, and taxation), incapacity (powers of attorney, trusts, protective orders and conservatorships), succession of ownership and control of family businesses (lifetime gifts, entity selection, transfer restriction, buyout and control agreements); charitable gifts and nonprofit corporations (governance, investment management, liability and indemnification of officers and directors); qualified plans and IRAs (plan design for estate building and distribution choices, distribution planning); estate tax reduction planning (annual exclusion gifts, gifts which leverage tax savings on future value, valuation freezes and valuation discounts in corporations, LLCs and partnerships).
