Most private employers are not required by statute to investigate applicants’ past criminal activity. More and more employers conduct background checks in an effort to avoid a “bad hire” or liability for a negligent hire.

Melinda Sanders, an employment attorney at Quinlivan & Hughes, presented Tuesday to a group of business leaders at the St. Cloud Area Chamber on how to ensure your organization’s background checks are properly performed.

Melinda has been practicing law for over 20 years, primarily in the area of employment law. She represents and advises employers on various workplace laws and issues and frequently conducts training to educate employees, human professionals and supervisors.
