Accommodations for Pregnant and Nursing Mothers

Employers are required to make a variety of accommodations for pregnant and nursing mothers as well as parental leave. The Quinlivan & Hughes Employment Group provided an overview of the laws and recent changes this week at the firm’s latest Breakfast Seminar. Download the presentation.

The Minnesota Legislature in 2014 passed comprehensive laws to improve working conditions for women. While this legislation is now over 3 years old, we find many employers have not yet updated their policies and handbooks to reflect the changes and new protections for working women.

A few examples of the changes include:

  • Length of leave for pregnancy/parenting leave increased from 6 weeks to 12 weeks
  • Specific requirements for a place for nursing mothers to express milk
  • Inclusion of notice to employees of their right to disclose their wage

Take a moment to review and update your policies regarding the following to ensure they are current with Minnesota and federal laws:

  • Pregnancy accommodations
  • Parenting leave
  • Nursing mother accommodations

Feel free to reach out to any member of the Quinlivan & Hughes’ Employment Group for assistance reviewing and updating policies.
